Donald Trump has made yet another move that has left political watchers scratching their heads. In a twist that seems to fit the narrative of a real-life political soap opera, Trump decided to yank Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister from the running to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration after Chronister stood up and announced he was tapping out. A classic case of the Trumpian power play, it seems.

The sheriff may not have an easy time shaking off his controversial COVID-19 lockdown enforcement, where he was willing to throw a pastor under the bus for daring to reopen his Tampa-area megachurch. As if that wasn’t enough, Chronister’s views on attending religious services during the pandemic also rubbed some people the wrong way. It seems the MAGA faithful weren’t too keen on a lawman who saw enforcing lockdowns as an opportunity for a moral high ground moment.

As Trump hunts for a better pick to lead the DEA, others are vying for the position, including outgoing Rep. Anthony D’Esposito who is lobbying hard for the appointment. Interestingly, this debacle marks the second time one of Trump’s nominations has waved goodbye before the race even really started. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz was also shown the door under a cloud of impending scandal, leading many to wonder if this is a new trend akin to the shocking twists of Game of Thrones.
In the end, this saga continues to unfold with all the bravado and spectacle only Trump could conjure up.
