In the kaleidoscope of modern identity, one can turn on the television, open a social media app, or meander through a public square to encounter a lively debate on pronouns and personal labels. It’s a dizzying display of linguistic acrobatics, leaving some folks scratching their heads. Recently, a group of individuals shared their gender identities and pronoun preferences, sparking a conversation that seems to have outpaced the standard vocabulary most of us grew up with. These days, it seems, everyday language is becoming more of a tongue-twister than ever before.
The terms being tossed around were “gender queer,” “transmasc,” “non-binary,” and more. It’s a reminder of how our language has evolved—or as some might see it, spiraled—into a buffet of labels that could rival even the most complex algebra equations. But what exactly is “transmasc”? If you’re guessing it involves a costume, think again. It’s simply a way for those who were assigned female at birth and identify with masculinity, including trans men and some non-binary individuals, to express a masculine presence. In a world where identity is as customizable as your morning latte, one can’t help but wonder how we got here.
Among the crowd, another individual describes their pronouns as “he/they”—a sort of fluid identity where the rules of grammar are as flexible as your Aunt Gladys’s stretchy pants at Thanksgiving. In this universe of pronouns, words that once referred strictly to objects have now found their way into personal identity discussions.
