In a dramatic turn of events, the United States military launched a surprise attack on Iran, employing a well-orchestrated strategy that involved deception and precision firepower. It was a scenario that could be described as a high-stakes game of chess, complete with stealth bombers, bunker buster bombs, and a submarine equipped with Tomahawks. The U.S. government made sure to keep the element of surprise firmly in its grip as the mission unfolded, showcasing the military’s capability to execute complex operations under a veil of secrecy.
The mission kicked off in the early hours of Saturday morning, when two B2 bombers took off from their base in Missouri. Initially, their flight seemed to be heading west, which prompted flight trackers to speculate that they might be heading to Guam or Diego Garcia, thus giving Iran the false impression that any possible military action was still days away. Meanwhile, another group of B2s took off from Whitman, heading east, creating a perfect smokescreen to mask their true intentions. As night fell over the Middle East on Saturday, the real action began. Around 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, a U.S. submarine in the region launched the first salvo of more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles. The suspense reached a fever pitch as the strike package, featuring seven B2 Spirit bombers, quietly entered Iranian airspace. With minimal communication to avoid leaving traces, they flew toward their intended targets. Utilizing decoy aircraft to distract from their true approach, the B-2s flew in undetected, making smart use of tactics that would confuse and delay the Iranian defense systems.
From around 6:40 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, the B2 bombers began dispensing their payloads, which included bunker-buster bombs designed to infiltrate hardened targets with tremendous force. The military precision was on full display as the bombers dropped 12 massive GBU57 bombs on Fordo and two more on Natanz, while the submarine-launched Tomahawks targeted Esfahan. This strike marked the largest operational use of B-2s in U.S. history, underscoring the military’s striking capabilities and willingness to act decisively.
However, as with any ambitious military operation, questions remained about the effectiveness of the strikes and the longevity of their impact.
