Denmark has unveiled a $2 billion defense initiative aimed at bolstering its military presence in Greenland, a move that underscores the island’s growing importance in the Arctic’s geopolitical chessboard. The investment, announced earlier this year, includes the acquisition of Arctic naval vessels, long-range drones, and enhanced satellite capabilities to strengthen surveillance and sovereignty in the region. Greenland’s significance lies in its location and untapped resources, including rare earth elements critical for modern technology. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected such ambitions, calling for collaboration rather than confrontation while emphasizing Denmark’s commitment to defending Greenland’s sovereignty.
Denmark’s increased defense spending is also a response to broader Arctic tensions. Russia’s military buildup in the region and China’s growing interest in Arctic resources have heightened competition among global powers.
