In a recent podcast appearance, Washington Post columnist Philip Bump showcased his lack of journalism skills and critical thinking. When asked about Hunter Biden’s message to his daughter involving Joe Biden’s demands for money, Bump claimed he had “no idea what that means.” It’s concerning to see a supposed journalist dismiss explosive evidence without any interest in exploring it further. This dismissiveness speaks to the broader problem of how liberal media outlets handle important information.
But Bump’s missteps didn’t end there. He also posted on Thursday about former President Donald Trump, claiming that “fourteen presidents indirectly called out Trump’s threat to democracy.” However, it quickly became clear that Bump’s math was way off, as there aren’t fourteen living former presidents. Only five former presidents are still alive, including Trump. This raises serious questions about Bump’s ability to fact-check and provide accurate information.
Bump’s justification for his incorrect claim was even more absurd. He referred to an ad from Joe Biden and a letter signed by foundations connected to thirteen former presidents as evidence. However, neither the ad nor the letter mention Trump in any way. It’s astonishing that Bump can confidently assert something that is completely untrue. This is just another example of the factual problems that plague journalism today.
It’s ironic that Bump lacks curiosity when it comes to investigating Hunter Biden’s questionable actions, but is so quick to make false claims about Trump. Perhaps Bump should focus on the reality of what Americans truly think about Joe Biden, as evidenced by recent polls showing that a majority of Americans see his issues as a “national security threat.” It’s clear that Bump is more interested in pushing a biased narrative than informing the public with accurate information.
