It has been a rough week for Cori Bush, a member of the Squad and representative for Missouri. First, she received news that she would be facing a strong primary opponent in her Democratic district. The opponent, St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, cited Bush’s controversial statements on the Israel-Hamas conflict as a factor in his decision to challenge her instead of Sen. Josh Hawley. This is a clear indication that even within her own party, Bush’s views are raising concerns.

Bush’s troubles continued when she faced criticism from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). She tweeted about cosponsoring a resolution condemning Hamas for hostage-taking and urging their immediate release. However, it was revealed that her resolution, despite her claims, did not address Hamas, hostages, or any condemnation. This misleading statement only added to the criticism she faced.
To make matters worse, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby appeared on CNN and misgendered Bush during an interview. Despite being referred to as “Congresswoman” and being correctly identified as a woman, Kirby used the incorrect pronouns when discussing Bush. While this may have been just a slip of the tongue, it highlights the lack of respect and attention to detail that Bush’s statements and actions have garnered.
It is no surprise that these recent events have left Bush in a difficult position within her own party and exposed her missteps and misleading statements. It is imperative that elected officials maintain credibility and integrity when addressing important matters like the Israel-Hamas conflict. Bush’s actions and claims have only further divided the Democratic party and called into question her ability to effectively represent her constituents.
