House Republicans are firing back at the Biden administration after a White House memo called on media outlets to scrutinize GOP lawmakers in light of their efforts to launch an impeachment inquiry against President Biden. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) labeled the memo a “true act of desperation” by the Biden administration, highlighting the “political bias” of the corporate media. McCarthy pointed out the media’s attempt to bury the Hunter Biden laptop story as an example of their bias. He criticized the White House Counsel’s office for its lack of separation from the Biden personal legal team.

The Republicans’ impeachment inquiry stems from allegations of corruption surrounding President Biden and his family. The House Republicans claim to have uncovered “serious and credible allegations” that point to a “culture of corruption” within the administration. They accuse President Biden of participating in foreign business schemes while serving as vice president, including receiving payments from foreign entities. Notably, the documents reveal payments from countries like Romania, China, Russia, and Ukraine to the Biden family and their associates. The lawmakers are also investigating claims that President Biden intervened to get Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin fired because he was investigating Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian natural gas firm where Hunter Biden sat on the board.
The White House memo defended the president against the allegations, stating that House Republicans have been unable to produce any evidence of wrongdoing. It emphasized the significance of impeachment and urged the media to treat the claims with the appropriate scrutiny. The memo criticized the tendency to cover impeachment as a process story and insisted on unpacking the illegitimacy of the claims made by House Republicans. It concluded by accusing the GOP of basing their actions on unfounded allegations that have already been disproven.
Other Republican lawmakers echoed McCarthy’s criticism of the White House memo. Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) called it “outrageous” and demanded unbiased reporting of the facts. Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) expressed his concern about the lack of transparency and honesty from the White House and Democrats. In response to the memo, the House Republicans vow to follow the facts and hold the Biden administration accountable.
