U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon seems ready to give former President Donald Trump a break in his case about mishandling classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. This means that the trial won’t start on the previous date of May 20th, 2024, which is a big win for Trump’s legal team. OANN correspondent Daniel Baldwin spilled the beans on this delay, and it’s expected to be official any minute now, Friday morning.
Conservative reporter Julie Kelly chimed in to explain why Biden Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith only has himself to blame for this delay. She pointed out that Smith went after Trump with not one, but two huge federal cases within just two months. Not only did he charge Trump in the Mar-a-Lago case, but he also brought additional charges in a superseding indictment. And get this, the indictment came with a whopping 1.3 million documents and thousands of hours of video evidence from Mar-a-Lago. Judge Cannon has already made it clear that Smith has to give President Trump’s lawyers access to all of this evidence, so Smith only has himself to blame for the hold-up.

Prosecutors tried to argue in court that Trump is just trying to stall the trial until after the November 2024 election, in the hopes that he’ll be back in the White House and can dismiss both federal cases against him. But here’s the thing, Smith and his team have been playing dirty too. They claimed that a lot of the evidence is too top secret to share with the defense, and they even tried to keep the documents and footage in Washington, D.C., more than 1,000 miles away from where the trial is happening in Florida. And let’s not forget, they didn’t even interview Trump after the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago, which is why those false statement charges will probably crumble.
But the most ridiculous defense from Smith involves an email emoji. Seriously, an emoji. In an email chain about the security footage that was partially destroyed before the raid, there’s an emoji. And Smith thinks that’s enough to make a case against Trump. Give me a break! Trump’s lawyers have already promised to subpoena the FBI agents who conducted the raid and told Mar-a-Lago staff to turn off the cameras. This trial is becoming more and more of a joke.
