Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears has boldly spoken out against Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, labeling her a “diversity hire” in response to her dissenting opinion on a recent ruling. Sears appeared on Fox News to express her thoughts, lambasting the notion that Justice Jackson was selected solely based on her race and gender.
Sears criticized Justice Jackson’s statement during her Senate confirmation hearing in which she admitted her inability to define what a woman is, reasoning that she’s “not a biologist.” According to Sears, this kind of thinking reflects how society has become entangled in trivial identity politics, overlooking the importance of education and the urgent need for improved schooling in America.
While Justice Jackson’s dissent has been applauded by some, including legal scholars and Justice Clarence Thomas, Sears and her conservative allies argue that it lacks a constitutional basis. In her dissent, Justice Jackson wrote about the continued relevance of race in people’s everyday lives, claiming that the court’s ruling exacerbates existing problems rather than resolving them.

Justice Thomas, in his concurring opinion, criticized Justice Jackson’s viewpoint, asserting that she unfairly links the legacy of slavery and inherited wealth to negative socioeconomic outcomes for black Americans. Thomas firmly believes that such a perspective undermines individual achievement and perpetuates a victim mentality among young people.
As a conservative journalist, it is clear that Sears is unafraid to voice her conservative stance on the controversial appointment of Justice Jackson, challenging the claim that diversity should be the sole criterion for a Supreme Court Justice. In her view, this kind of identity-based selection undermines the principles of meritocracy and positions America at a disadvantage in the global race for dominance.
