In a delightful twist of fate, the National Education Association (NEA), a beacon of progressivism, is facing internal turmoil. The Saint Paul Federation of Educators (SPFE), a group aligned with the NEA’s ideology, has decided to boycott the NEA’s 2023 Representative Assembly in Orlando, Florida. This boycott is in response to the NAACP’s travel advisory, which warns of Florida’s alleged hostility towards African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Oh, the irony!
When Wokeness Implodes: An Irony-Steeped Showdown in Florida, Echoes of Janus v. AFSCME, and a Fresh Start for Florida's Public Employees https://t.co/VjOjFFWNNJ

This ironic tale takes place on the fifth anniversary of the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court decision, which dealt a blow to union membership across the nation. Since that fateful ruling, the NEA has lost over 200,000 members, a 7.6% decline. In contrast, the Freedom Foundation has assisted more than 143,000 government employees in opting out of their unions. It seems that the NEA is being forced to swallow its own bitter potion of wokeness, where ideology trumps dialogue and mutual respect.
But fear not, for there is hope on the horizon in the sunshine state of Florida. A new chapter has begun with the passing of SB 256, a forward-looking legislation that aims to protect and expand the rights of public employees. This bill brings much-needed changes, such as banning payroll dues deduction and ensuring that employees have the freedom to join or leave unions at their discretion. Unions are also now required to provide a consent form to employees, informing them that membership is voluntary and that they can’t be discriminated against for refusing to join.
But it doesn’t stop there. SB 256 also mandates annual union membership audits and triggers a state-run election if membership falls below 60%. This gives employees the power to decide whether they want to be represented by a union. Transparency is also a priority, as the bill requires unions to file audited financial statements. These changes empower public employees, echoing the spirit of the Janus v. AFSCME decision.
It is clear that we must fight against ideological excess and radical teachers’ unions in order to protect the rights of public employees and ensure a quality education for our children. “Wokeness” only leads to division and conflict, instead of the unity and cooperation we need. As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of Janus v. AFSCME, we must remember the strides we have made towards empowering individuals over unions. The implementation of SB 256 further solidifies this cause, offering freedom and choice to public employees. Let us stand united against those who seek to divide us, for the sake of our children, our public employees, and the future of our nation.
