In a closed-door meeting with both Republican and Democratic House leaders, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy wasted no time in getting down to business with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. McCarthy, never one to shy away from tough questions, pressed Zelenskyy on a variety of important topics. Accountability, the speed of weapons arriving from the U.S., and the need for a victory plan were all on the table.

But it was House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael T. McCaul who really brought the heat. McCaul left no stone unturned when he asked Zelenskyy what he truly needed in the war against Russia. And the answer was clear: weapons, and fast.
“We need to give them everything they need,” McCaul declared boldly. He even went as far as to suggest that if the Biden administration refuses to provide the necessary support, the House should take matters into their own hands and write it into their appropriations. Now that’s what I call taking charge!
McCaul didn’t stop there. He expressed his frustration with the Biden administration’s sluggishness in sending weapons to Ukraine, specifically mentioning the long-awaited F-16 fighter jets. He also highlighted that the speaker tackled the issue of accountability and discussed what a plan for victory might look like. It’s refreshing to see leaders who are serious about protecting our allies.
During the meeting, the topic of President Biden’s $24 billion request for more Ukraine funding inevitably came up. McCaul, ever the pragmatist, made it clear that while Ukraine will get the money, there’s a catch. The catch being that Ukraine needs to show how they plan to win. It’s like saying, “Here’s the money, but you better have a game plan!” And it’s hard to argue with that logic.
McCaul acknowledged that there may be disagreements on both sides, but he emphasized that a war of attrition is exactly what Putin wants. We can’t afford to play into his hands. We need to plan for victory, and we need to do it soon. The congressman’s passion for protecting our interests is truly inspiring.
In these uncertain times, it’s reassuring to see leaders like McCarthy and McCaul fighting for accountability, swift action, and a clear path to victory. Let’s hope their efforts pave the way for a stronger alliance with Ukraine and a more secure future for all parties involved.
