Megyn Kelly, in a blistering segment, reminded Americans that AOC and other progressives pushed policies and rhetoric that encouraged budget cuts and experimentation with public safety at the very moment cities were facing unprecedented disorder.
Back in June 2020 AOC laid out what “defund” looked like to her: a wholesale rethinking of how public safety dollars are spent and a call to shift resources toward social services and community programs. Her office even posted an explainer as the phrase went viral, a fact that opponents quickly weaponized to argue that Democrats wanted to gut policing rather than reform it.
The results were predictable: even where city budgets didn’t dramatically collapse, the message emboldened policymakers to experiment with cuts and reassignments, and violent crime surged in 2020–2021 in many major cities. Homicides and shootings spiked in places from Portland to Minneapolis and beyond, leaving grieving families, shuttered businesses, and neighborhoods worse off — the human cost of ideological experiments that treated public safety as a bargaining chip.
Make no mistake: this was not an accident. Radical slogans and theatrical calls to “reimagine” policing fed a narrative that policing itself was the enemy, and when budgets and morale fell, some communities paid with ruined lives and shattered futures. Conservative commentators and lawmakers have repeatedly pointed to the statistics and to constituent stories of longer emergency response times, emboldened criminals, and families who will never be made whole again.
Megyn Kelly’s admonition that AOC’s past advocacy “ruined many lives” may be blunt, but it captures a vital truth: policies have consequences, and rhetoric matters. Americans who value order, law, and the dignity of everyday life should not be shamed into silence while left-wing ideologues promote theories that dissolve the institutions protecting our streets — and when Democrats backpedaled and cities later restored funding, the voters who suffered remembered who pushed the risky experiment.
Now is the moment for conservatives to stand unapologetically with the men and women who keep our communities safe and to demand leaders who put citizens before ideology. We should push for meaningful reforms that strengthen policing where needed, fund mental health and addiction services responsibly, and reject any political fashion that sacrifices public safety at the altar of virtue signaling. America’s working families deserve common-sense leadership that values life, liberty, and the rule of law.
