On Tuesday, the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca said it would take back its COVID-19 shot named Vaxzevria. The company decided to do this because not many people wanted to get it. This vaccine was not permitted in the United States.
The company stated that it is pulling out this vaccine because there are many other kinds of vaccines now. These new vaccines are considered to be better. The company also said that governments all around the world said they did a good job and that their vaccine was important. AstraZeneca said it will now work with the people who make rules and their partners to come up with a plan to finish using this vaccine and help get rid of COVID-19.

More than 3 billion doses of this vaccine were given to people all over the world. Now, the company won’t make this vaccine anymore or give it out.
The company said a while ago that their vaccine could cause a very rare and dangerous problem. This problem could make people have blood clots and have low levels of blood platelets. AstraZeneca said in papers from the court that their vaccine “can, in very rare cases, cause TTS”. TTS, which stands for Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome, has been linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK and many serious injuries. AstraZeneca is being sued by more than 50 people and families who say they were hurt by this in a court case.
The news said that the company thinks that it is just a “pure coincidence” that they decided to take back this vaccine shortly after people found out about this problem. One lady, Kate Scott, said her husband got hurt from this vaccine and that she is happy the vaccine won’t be used anymore. Her husband has permanent damage to his brain because of it.
The U.K. government mostly stopped using the vaccine in the fall of 2021. They started giving out the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines instead and are now giving out booster shots with them.
