The Biden administration has decided to temporarily halt its immigration program that facilitates the entry of up to 30,000 monthly migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This decision comes after the discovery of widespread fraud involving the sponsors of these migrants. It seems some well-intentioned allies of the administration may have taken a wrong turn and quickly checked their integrity at the door.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) took action after an internal report revealed that the application process had been tainted by numerous instances of fraud explicitly related to the sponsors—those gushingly enthusiastic folks who promised to take these newcomers under their wings. The report uncovered disturbing patterns, such as social security numbers, phone numbers, and addresses being recycled more than an unseasoned plastic bottle. Talk about the recycling industry taking its mission too far!

In a display of bureaucratic righteousness, DHS emphasized that it had mechanisms in place to sniff out any fraudulent activity. But it seemingly needed a magnifying glass and a whole team of detectives to uncover just how many shady applications were flooding in. Examination of these dubious submissions revealed that a staggering number of forms had been filled out by individuals who apparently never had to suffer the inconvenience of actually providing accurate information.
The details are alarming. Nearly 100,000 forms were filled out by only a few thousand sponsors, some of whom had claims of connectivity that were sketchier than an undercooked meatloaf. The report included the delightful footnote that some social security numbers belonged to deceased individuals while others listed addresses that were commonly known storage units. One sponsor’s number was used more than 2,000 times—was he running an unofficial lottery for free entry into the U.S.? The entire initiative is beginning to sound less like a burgeoning humanitarian effort and more like a low-stakes reality show.
Of course, the Biden administration assures us that all migrants entering through this program are “thoroughly screened and vetted.” In this scenario, the vetting seems conveniently detached from the proceedings surrounding their so-called supporters. It’s almost comical to think that as fraudulent behavior slipped through the cracks, they believe the actual migrants remained blissfully unaware. One must wonder if the administration thinks these newcomers are so pure that they wouldn’t dare collaborate with these fraudulent sponsors.
This attempt to bypass Congressional authority for a lofty humanitarian agenda does not come without consequences. An immigration program of this scale, bloated and half-baked, should raise more than a few eyebrows—yet here we are, treating it like a field day for immigrants. The question must be asked: is anyone even watching the store? Republicans should ramp up their efforts to shut down this farce at the legislative level before the program spirals into even deeper chaos. After all, one must wonder what new levels of absurdity this administration can reach before it finally jazzes up its common-sense meter.
