In his speech, President Biden talked about the personal grief he has experienced, particularly the death of his son Beau nine years ago due to cancer from toxic exposure during his time with the Army in Iraq. The President emphasized the lasting impact of their sacrifice and expressed pride in their service and dedication to duty.
He also emphasized the commitment that service members make to an idea, rather than a specific place or person, highlighting the importance of upholding democracy. President Biden stressed that freedom must be continually defended in the face of challenges from autocracy and greed, reaffirming the significance of Memorial Day in recommitting to the future they fought for.
The President’s remarks were followed by the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin were also present. Secretary Austin, who made his first public appearance since a medical procedure, paid tribute to fallen heroes and underscored the importance of defending democracy in their honor.
President Biden’s Memorial Day address at Arlington National Cemetery was a solemn tribute to fallen service members and a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to uphold the ideals for which they sacrificed.
