Marijuana is currently categorized as a Schedule I drug, alongside substances like heroin and LSD. Biden’s proposal would reclassify marijuana to a Schedule III substance, meaning it would be considered less potent with less severe consequences for possession. This change marks a significant departure from Biden’s previous support for strict drug laws during his time in the Senate.
Critics, including former Drug Enforcement Administrator Tim Shea, claim that Biden’s decision is not based on scientific evidence, but rather on politics and gaining votes. They argue that the potency of marijuana has increased in recent years, raising concerns about the potential repercussions of loosening regulations.
