Attorney General Merrick Garland has officially wrapped up the investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified material. In a letter addressed to congressional leaders, Garland revealed that no criminal charges will be filed against Biden or anyone associated with him. The special counsel, Robert K. Hur, submitted his final report along with a letter from counsel to Garland on February 5, 2024. Garland explained that the report is currently undergoing a privilege review by the White House before it can be made public.

The letter did not disclose any crucial details regarding the investigation, but it is expected that the special counsel’s report will shed more light on the matter. The investigation was initiated after classified material was found in Biden’s garage in Delaware and among other records at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington.
Despite the discovery of roughly 20 classified documents at these locations, no charges are anticipated in the case. This may be due, in part, to longstanding Justice Department legal opinions that essentially prevent the department from charging a sitting president. The decision to charge the president falls within the purview of Congress through impeachment proceedings, as dictated by the Constitution.
