In a shocking turn of events, General Motors announced that they would be letting go of 1,300 hardworking, American employees in Michigan. The reason? Their production of the Chevrolet Volt and Camaro is coming to an abrupt end. This news comes on the heels of the United Auto Workers union striking a deal with automakers, only to have their members face the chopping block. It’s like they say, one step forward, two steps back.

The heartless layoffs are set to hit 945 workers at the Orion Assembly, where the beloved Chevrolet Volt is lovingly crafted with American hands. And if that weren’t enough, an additional 369 employees at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping, the home of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro, will also be handed their pink slips. It seems like the Biden administration’s “green energy mandates” are really taking a toll on the American auto industry, and hardworking Americans are the ones paying the price.
Don’t worry, though, the company is attempting to soften the blow by claiming there will be other opportunities for the workers. But let’s be real here, how many of these displaced employees will actually be able to find equally good jobs in this struggling economy? It’s just another broken promise and a slap in the face to the American worker.
And it’s not just GM feeling the heat. Ford, another American institution, recently let go of 750 workers who were working on the F-150 Lightning. This is just more evidence that the Biden administration’s electric vehicle agenda is hurting hardworking American families. But do they care? Of course not.
Let’s not forget UAW president Shawn Fain’s embarrassing fawning over Biden and the Democratic party. He let Biden visit the picket line, which really just turned into a photo op, let’s be honest. But even he had to admit in a memo that the president’s electric vehicle push is causing serious damage to the auto industry. It’s about time these so-called leaders recognize the real impact of their lofty, impractical policies.
And don’t get started on the Biden administration’s unrealistic goal to increase electric vehicle sales tenfold in the next decade. By 2035, they want all federal government and non-combat military vehicles to be electric. Who’s paying for all this? The hardworking American taxpayer, that’s who. It’s like they’re actively funding the demise of their own jobs with billions in public money. The switch to electric may sound great in theory, but the reality is that it’s causing major financial problems for automakers. Ford even expects to lose a whopping $3 billion in operating profit on its electric vehicle business this year alone.
Fortunately, House Republicans are taking a stand against the Biden administration’s electric vehicle pipe dream. They’ve passed legislation to rein in these unrealistic goals. It’s about time someone in Washington stood up for the American worker and the struggling auto industry. Let’s hope this move will make a real difference for these hardworking Americans who are being left behind by the current administration’s folly.
