Biden’s G7 Blunders Hint at Deeper Issues as Polls Show Leadership Doubts

President Biden managed to turn the G7 summit into a comedy show just months into his presidency, stumbling through an embarrassing speech and leaving world leaders in stitches. In June 2021, while rubbing elbows with the leaders of the world’s wealthiest nations, the 78-year-old President scolded British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for apparently forgetting to introduce the South African president – who, as it happened, had already been introduced by Johnson. The gaffe left Biden staring blankly and mumbling in confusion, much to the amusement of the other leaders.

This wasn’t Biden’s first memory mishap; just a few weeks earlier, he couldn’t recall the name of his own Secretary of Defense, instead referring to him as “the guy who runs that outfit over there.” Mainstream U.S. media gave these blunders little attention, and both sides of the political aisle seemed willing to sweep it under the rug. However, these were early warning signs of a deeper issue that has since exploded, casting a long shadow over the Democratic Party ahead of the upcoming elections.

Recent polling numbers reveal the American public’s growing skepticism about Biden’s capacity to lead. His performance in debates and public speaking events has alarmed many, culminating in calls from panicked Democrats for him to step aside for a younger candidate. It appears the warning bells have only gotten louder, but the mainstream media continues to tiptoe around the issues, providing limited coverage and focusing instead on former President Trump.

Biden’s handlers have worked overtime to counter concerns about his mental and physical abilities, but the numbers don’t lie. A November 2021 Politico/Morning Consult poll indicated that half of the voters questioned Biden’s health, a sentiment that has only intensified. By August 2023, a significant majority of voters in an Associated Press/NORC poll considered Biden too old to serve a second term, with many doubting his mental acuity.

As Biden’s gaffes become more frequent and severe, ranging from mistaking deceased politicians for the living to confusing countries and key historical figures, Democratic leaders’ denial and wishful thinking have proven costly. The latest polls and public opinion suggest that voters are desperately seeking new leadership while the Democratic Party remains paralyzed by a lack of foresight and preparation.
