Biden’s ICE policy faulted as illegal immigration removal surges 69 percent

In a shocking turn of events that seems to be straight out of a political thriller, U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) recently reported a startling surge in the number of illegal border crossers being removed from the country. With nearly 68,000 removals in just two quarters of fiscal 2024, this number reflects a whopping 69% jump from the previous year. The irony isn’t lost; as illegal immigration continues to soar, ICE is reportedly busy trying to catch up, showing just how behind the curve federal immigration policies have gotten under the current leadership.

What’s truly bewildering is that, as of June 2024, almost 180,000 illegal foreign nationals were living freely within the U.S., thanks to ICE’s “Alternatives to Detention” (ATD) program, a policy that many Republicans have taken issue with. While these illegal entrants enjoy their day-to-day lives, far too many Americans are shaking their heads, wondering how letting these individuals roam free aligns with national security and lawful immigration practices. Some members of Congress argue that ATD is outright illegal, and it is hard to argue against that assertion when it blatantly appears to contravene laws requiring the detention of inadmissible individuals.

In the colorful world of ATD, the government introduces state-of-the-art monitoring technology, like smartphones and GPS devices, to ensure that illegal crossers toe the line. However, any intelligent observer might raise an eyebrow at the idea of trusting these individuals to self-report compliance via an app—who needs a smartphone for illegal activity when they’ve already broken federal law by crossing the border? This “tech-savvy” approach has left many questioning the practicality, not to mention the effectiveness, of this system. It’s reminiscent of giving a child a candy bar and expecting them to resist the urge to eat it. Spoiler alert: it isn’t going to happen.

Regions like Texas and California are bearing the brunt, harboring the lion’s share of illegal individuals who obviously think the laws don’t apply to them. The nearly 24,000 found in Texas alone is a staggering statistic that could make a Texan grit their teeth. What’s more troubling is that cities like Chicago and Miami are not far behind in hosting a significant volume of these lawbreakers. It is a wonder how many times the phrase “sanctuary city” needs to be repeated before it becomes clear that these areas are more like welcome mats for illegal immigrants rather than tough-on-crime territories.

A chilling narrative emerges as every illegal immigrant released under ATD is a potential danger; previously charged individuals are now among the forgotten statistics. Law enforcement officials are already reporting that they’ve nabbed non-citizens only to find they were previously processed and essentially set free. With real crimes occurring at the hands of those who have been let go, even the most ardent advocates of “compassionate” immigration reform must face the hard truth: the current regime seems to prioritize leniency over safety, a dangerous trade-off for any civil society.

Ultimately, the data doesn’t lie, and the consequences of the current administration’s policies are laying bare a pattern that is hard to ignore. As thousands of individuals with criminal records remain on American soil due to misguided leniency and technology that can only do so much, the voices calling for decisive action grow louder. Under the leadership of figures like Tom Homan, a return to a law-abiding approach that prioritizes the safety of American citizens seems more urgent than ever. Each number on the ATD dashboard tells a story that should not be ignored, especially given the mounting dangers posed by those who clearly have no respect for the law.
