The Biden administration appears to be making a habit of creating crisis zones instead of solutions, and the situation in Aurora, Colorado, is a prime example. With the federal government teaming up with Denver authorities and some publicly subsidized NGOs—yes, those wonderfully efficient organizations funded by taxpayers—Aurora has become a new hotspot for Venezuelan migrants. It seems the administration decided that the best way to show compassion is by enhancing local crime rates and providing a warm welcome to gangs.
In a classic case of liberal policy at work, the influx of migrants has been planned with as much foresight as an amateur magician pulling rabbits out of a hat. Those in charge of this operation apparently didn’t consider the ripple effect of relocating thousands of newcomers into an area that is still recovering from its own issues, not to mention lacking adequate resources. The result? A community suddenly facing an uptick in crime, likely leaving long-time residents feeling a tad bewildered—as if they’d woken up in a scene from a horror movie.
It’s no surprise that moving a significant number of migrants into Aurora would attract less-than-savory characters. The mélange of good intentions and bad policy is as predictable as a bad sitcom, where nobody can find the punchline. Everyone knows that high levels of immigration, especially when not managed properly, can lead to growing pains—except, of course, for those in charge who seem hell-bent on repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
Local law enforcement officers are feeling the heat. With crime rates climbing and resources being stretched thinner than a vegan diet at a barbecue, they have to contend with a growing number of challenges. These officers are now tasked with policing an increasingly unstable environment, while the folks calling the shots in D.C. seem blissfully unaware of the chaos they’ve created. One can only assume that the administration’s response to local anxieties will involve more vague statements and press releases that do little to solve the issues at hand.
Perhaps the most ironic twist in this saga is the assumption by the administration that they were doing communities a favor. It’s almost as if they believe strongarming cities into accepting a surging migrant population can circumvent their own mismanaged immigration policies. But alas, the realities on the ground tell a different story—one that involves heightened concerns for safety and an overwhelmed local infrastructure. One wonders how many more “compassionate” policies like this it will take for commonsense to finally make an appearance in Washington.
