The Biden-era asylum loophole that has been strangling our immigration system is finally getting the attention it deserves: the Trump administration is preparing to revoke B1 and B2 business and tourism visas for as many as 200,000 foreigners who later sought asylum, a move officials say would be the largest mass visa revocation in U.S. history. This is a long-overdue crackdown on people who abuse visitor visas to skirt our laws and clog up the asylum process meant for genuine refugees.
State Department officials made plain they are coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and rescind the nonimmigrant visas of those who came as short-term visitors and then filed for asylum to stay permanently. The blunt language from State—echoed by senior officials—signals a serious, organized effort rather than a piecemeal policy stunt.
Senior administration figures have not been coy about the problem: Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau called out the torrent of what he described as frivolous asylum claims that have overwhelmed adjudication, allowed work permits, and enabled many to “put down roots” while their cases drag on for years. Conservatives should celebrate a president willing to stop gamesmanship that rewards lawbreaking and punishes lawful travelers and American communities.
Opponents will howl and lawyers will flock to court, of course, but sovereignty matters more than political theater. Officials themselves note that revocation of a visa does not automatically mean immediate deportation; rather, it restores legal categories and tools so immigration courts and enforcement agencies can do their jobs without being gamed.
Since taking office the administration has already tightened vetting, imposed visa bond requirements, and revoked large numbers of visas for criminality and other ineligibilities — measures that prioritize American safety and common sense over open-door permissiveness. If up to 200,000 revocations are finalized, it will be a bold, necessary reset that tells the world the United States will not be a magnet for opportunistic abuse of our immigration system.
Patriots and practical policymakers alike should press Congress and the courts to back common-sense enforcement instead of enabling obstructionist litigation designed to preserve the status quo. Secure borders and orderly immigration are not partisan buzzwords — they are the foundation of a free and prosperous nation — and any leader who acts to defend that principle deserves our support.
