Dr. Wladimir Lorentz, the founder of the Miami-based birth-tourism operation Have My Baby in Miami, invoked his Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer questions at a House Oversight hearing and was ultimately excused by Rep. Brandon Gill after refusing to cooperate.
This was no accidental oversight; Lorentz was subpoenaed as part of an investigation into companies that actively market U.S. birthright to foreign nationals, and congressional staff have been probing the company’s marketing and business practices. The Oversight Committee’s letters and subpoenas make clear this was a targeted inquiry, not political theater.
Reports indicate the operation under scrutiny claims to have facilitated thousands of births on U.S. soil for noncitizens, a brazen exploitation of our immigration laws and public resources. Americans who pay taxes to sustain hospitals and social services should not be financing a shadow industry that monetizes U.S. citizenship.
This hearing is part of a broader Republican effort to confront the mechanics of birth tourism and to close the loopholes that invite exploitation of birthright citizenship. House Republicans, led by Rep. Gill and committee leadership, have sent multiple letters and launched investigations aiming to expose and stop these businesses from profiting off our broken system.
Patriotic Americans should demand more than evasions and Fifth Amendment theater — they should demand accountability. Representative Gill has said the goal is to pursue criminal referrals where warranted, and that approach is exactly what is needed to deter those who turn citizenship into a product for sale. Our nation’s sovereignty and the integrity of American citizenship depend on it.
