Steve Cortes, a former spokesman for the pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC "Never Back Down," has unexpectedly shifted his support from Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to former President Donald Trump, the probable Republican presidential nominee in 2024. Cortes, who previously advocated for DeSantis, retracted his stance in an opinion piece entitled "Only Trump Can Save America."
Cortes acknowledges his prior erroneous assessment in the article, proposing, "I had faith that Republican voters were prepared for a fresh phase of the America First movement following Trump's inauguration. I presently hold the belief that I was incorrect. This shift in viewpoint occurred after the substantial triumph of Trump in Iowa, where he obtained 50.4 percent of the vote total, while DeSantis trailed in second place with 21.3 percent of the electorate.

Cortes implored his Republican colleagues to assess the political climate and coalesce in support of Trump, highlighting the former president's decisive advantage among GOP constituents. He emphasized the importance of party unity, particularly as attention turns to an impending confrontation with Democratic adversaries in the forthcoming elections.
Cortes cautioned against internal strife, stating, "We do not have the luxury of further internal strife and must instead prepare for an epic battle this autumn against our adversaries who are inflicting daily damage upon America." He acknowledged that the primary season requires a unified front.
This change in opinion represents a substantial deviation from Cortes' prior position, in which he lauded DeSantis as a leader filled with patriotism. Presently, he considers Trump to be the pivotal figure in spearheading the resistance against the governing class and oligarchs, whom he believes are determined to undermine the American way of life.
As he did in the 2016 and 2020 elections, Cortes urged patriotic populists to join him in supporting Trump's cause and pledged to continue working in that direction. The unforeseen alteration introduces an additional stratum of fascination to the progressive terrain of Republican politics in anticipation of the 2024 presidential election.
