In a tragic turn of events, Steve Alembik, a 72-year-old longtime Republican activist, died earlier this month in an attempted murder-suicide, as reported by The Miami Herald. On October 9, Alembik allegedly shot a woman believed to be his wife in the parking lot of a Palm Beach County restaurant before turning the gun on himself. Although she was able to seek refuge in the restaurant and receive medical attention, Alembik’s actions have shocked the Republican community.
Alembik, known for his flamboyant American flag-themed outfits and his generous donations of over $200,000 to Republican candidates, had a controversial history. Most notably, he once made a racist tweet about former President Barack Obama, referring to him as a “f–king Muslim n—er.” While Alembik expressed regret for the tweet, it caused significant controversy, leading Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott to donate Alembik’s $1,100 contribution to charity.
Additionally, The Miami Herald noted that Alembik had previously exhibited unstable behavior. He allegedly threatened a journalist from the publication and was arrested in 2018 on a domestic violence charge. However, the charge was ultimately dismissed through a pre-trial diversion program.
Following Alembik’s death, right-wing activist Laura Loomer acknowledged the mental health struggles he faced. In a social media post, she stated, “Sadly, those of us who knew Steve understood that he struggled with his mental health at times, which he ultimately succumbed to when he died this week, but he always put on a smile for those around him and never complained.” Independent conservative journalist James O’Keefe also spoke out, highlighting Alembik’s support for his work.
The tragic incident involving Steve Alembik reminds us of the importance of mental health awareness and support. It is crucial that society rallies together to provide assistance and care for individuals facing mental health challenges, so that such devastating acts can be prevented in the future.
