Let’s start with a simple, unarguable truth- the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution explicitly secures the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” These 27 words, ratified in 1791, provide the very basis of our discussion.
The Significance of ‘Shall Not Be Infringed’
The phrase ‘shall not be infringed’ does not leave room for creative re-interpretation. It is clear, declaratory, and unequivocal. It bears constitutional authority and ought to be honored. The attempts to control, regulate, or limit gun rights clearly violate the Constitution’s literal language, undermining citizens’ rights to personal security.
History Paints an Important Picture
The Founding Fathers did not create the Second Amendment for hunting or sports. They envisioned it as a fundamental check against governmental tyranny—an insurance policy against any potential oppression. Moving Forward: A Second Amendment Perspective
It’s high time that the American people recognize the fundamental importance of the Second Amendment. It’s not about owning firearms for the fun of it, or because they’re fascinating pieces of engineering (although they certainly can be both). It’s about freedom. It’s about the knowledge—and the assurance—that as an American, you have the undeniable right to protect your life, your freedom, and your family.
What does it tell about a government that’s continuously working to disarm its law-abiding citizens? It certainly doesn’t suggest trust or a healthy respect for constitutionally provided rights.
It’s not about being pro-gun or anti-gun. It’s about respecting and upholding the constitution. It’s about preserving the liberties of a free and strong nation. We should all remember this the next time the topic of gun control becomes a dinner table discussion.
