The candidate, Graham Platner, insists the mark was from his youth and has tried to minimize its meaning, but voters deserve straight answers, not excuses.
Despite the ugly symbolism and the inevitable fallout, Platner has advanced to become the Democratic nominee in the Maine Senate contest, leaving many conservatives wondering how the party could tolerate such baggage in a nominee. Voters who believe in character and national loyalty are right to object when serious questions about a candidate’s judgment are shrugged off.
Even more galling to many patriots was the public defense and soft-pedaling from high-profile Democratic operatives and allies who ought to know better, with figures in the party establishment stepping in to smooth things over.
