In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, some congressional Democrats are raising concerns about President Biden’s support for Israel. While Israel continues its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, left-leaning Democrats are echoing the accusations made by the Arab world against Israel’s military operations. The war started when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in the death of over 1,000 people. In response, Israel has been carrying out airstrikes on Gaza and has now initiated a ground incursion to root out and eliminate Hamas terrorists.

Critics argue that Israel’s response has been disproportionate and is harming Palestinian civilians in the process. President Biden has voiced support for Israel but has also urged caution to minimize civilian casualties and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. However, some Democrats are now speaking out against Israel’s handling of the operation, suggesting a potential shift within the party.
While Biden has resisted calls for a cease-fire and refrained from commenting on Israel’s approach, other Democrats have been openly critical of the pace of humanitarian aid, the communication blackout, and the rising death toll among Palestinian civilians. They have also raised concerns about Israel’s objectives in carrying out a major ground assault.
Recently, a group of Democratic senators called on Biden to work with Israel, Egypt, and the United Nations to deliver fuel into Gaza amidst the humanitarian crisis. These criticisms from within the party pose new challenges for Biden, who may be held accountable for Israel’s actions due to his declared support.
The White House has acknowledged some of the concerns raised by Democrats, emphasizing the need for accountability. However, the situation is complicated by Hamas hiding among civilians, which makes it difficult for Israel to target the terrorist group without causing collateral damage.
Support for Israel among Democratic lawmakers had been largely stable, except for “The Squad” members, who have consistently shown opposition to Israel and support for Hamas. However, the growing criticism from other Democrats could indicate a shift in their stance and potentially influence Biden’s approach to the conflict. This could also deepen the rift within the party regarding the overall Israel/Palestinian conflict.
