The Democratic National Committee has officially set a deadline for wannabe presidential candidates, giving them until Sunday at 6 p.m. to declare their intentions. This panic button was pressed immediately following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would retire from the campaign trail. Kamala Harris is currently the sole contender foolish enough to toss her hat into the ring, and one can’t help but imagine how poorly this competition is shaping up for the Democrats.
The decision to impose a deadline came through a glowing endorsement from the Democratic National Convention’s rules committee, which approved the plan with a remarkable 157-3 vote. Clearly, this is what they call “unity” in a party that’s been tearing itself apart behind the scenes. In addition to the Sunday deadline, candidates will need to grab 300 electronic signatures from convention delegates, ensuring no more than 50 signatures come from any single state. One can almost hear the groans from those desperate politicians scrambling for support through yet another convoluted process.
If multiple candidates do manage to qualify, Democrats face the delightful prospect of prolonged voting. But if luck favors Kamala, who currently stands alone in the race, the voting could commence as early as August 1. This is a bit like a political reality show where the audience is forced to watch a cringeworthy one-woman show.
Should there be any delegates at the convention unwilling to party on the Kamala train, they have the option to vote “uncommitted” or throw support behind a ghost candidate who failed to qualify. Either way, their noble pursuit will only serve to reinforce the well-known fact that Kamala Harris is the DNC’s chosen one by default. Shockingly, a recent survey revealed that she already has more than the required 1,976 delegates to clinch the nomination on the first ballot. Talk about a cakewalk.
But the hilarity doesn’t end there. Kamala has a rapidly approaching deadline of August 7 to select her running mate. This urgency stems from Ohio’s election law, riddled with complexity, which once set a firm deadline. Despite Ohio’s legislature’s attempt to extend this absurdity, it will only kick in after September 1, leaving the DNC to play it safe and dodge potential legal headaches.

Reports indicate that there’s already buzz regarding potential running mates for Kamala, including some not-so-bright lights from critical swing states. Among them are Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, North Carolina’s Roy Cooper, and Mark Kelly from Arizona. Instead of putting the country first, the DNC seems hell-bent on backing themselves into another corner with a “safe” pick that probably won’t excite anyone.
In what can only be seen as a joyous vindication for conservatives, the Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project has dubbed this entire timeline a “complete and total victory.” They claim this pivot by the DNC is nothing short of a surrender to their litigation threats. They contend it’s all falling toward the grim reality of the Democrats’ dire mismanagement, leaving them stuck with Harris. The countdown is on. As the Democratic National Convention readies for its chaotic start on August 19 in Chicago, observers can only wait to see how this political circus unfolds.
