The Department of Justice has finally put a hefty price tag on their failure to properly investigate the monstrous acts of Larry Nassar. The DOJ coughed up nearly $139 million as a settlement for the victims who suffered under this creep’s treatment. This means the victims are getting some serious compensation while we’re left scratching our heads at the incompetence of our supposed law enforcement agencies.
The infamous Larry Nassar, a creep disguised as a sports doctor, was found guilty of preying on young female gymnasts while working with USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. What’s more ludicrous is that the FBI’s incompetence was on full display in a July 2021 report that detailed their monumental failings in handling the case. This failure was shouted from the rooftops by Nassar’s victims, including the renowned Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
The acting Associate Attorney General, Benjamin C. Mizer, made a statement on Tuesday criticizing Nassar’s abuse of power and the FBI’s lack of action. The DOJ says they’ve settled 139 administrative claims totaling a gut-wrenching $138.7 million. All this money just goes to show how badly the FBI dropped the ball, allowing Nassar to continue his despicable behavior unchecked for far too long.
It’s mind-boggling that these allegations weren’t taken seriously right from the start. No amount of money can undo the pain and suffering inflicted by Nassar, but it’s a start. The DOJ is hoping this settlement can provide some much-needed support to the victims as they continue to heal from this ordeal.
The incompetence of the FBI and its Indianapolis agents, as uncovered in the damning 2021 report, is just another disgraceful mark on the agency’s track record. The Justice Department’s settlement is just the latest in a string of apologies for failing to protect the innocent victims of Nassar’s sickening abuse.

It’s important to remember how Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics also had to reach into their pockets to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements. These massive payouts illustrate the depth of the damage caused by Nassar and the gross mishandling of his case. It’s a shame that this money can never fully erase the pain and suffering that has been inflicted upon these innocent victims.
In the end, it’s a small win that the victims are receiving financial compensation, but it’s a hard pill to swallow knowing that this kind of tragedy could have been prevented with a little more competence from the very people tasked with protecting and serving. It’s a good thing that the victims are finally getting some closure, but it’s quite shameful that it took this much time and money for justice to be served.
