Federal Judge Halts Biden Plan to Extend Obamacare to DACA Recipients

A recent ruling from a federal judge could be the latest example of the ongoing tug-of-war between the Biden administration’s expansive immigration policies and a legal framework that insists on adhering to the letter of the law. U.S. District Judge Daniel Traynor, a Trump appointee, has partially halted President Biden’s ambitious attempt to extend Obamacare benefits to illegal immigrant Dreamers under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The judge has decided that rewriting immigration law isn’t really within the president’s job description.

In a classic case of overreach, the Biden administration sought to redefine Dreamers as quasi-legally acceptable entities so they could access coverage and subsidies under Obamacare. But Judge Traynor firmly reminded everyone that Congress—not the executive branch—holds the reins when it comes to immigration law. His injunction now applies in 19 states that challenge Biden’s latest power play, essentially giving a collective “not so fast” to a plan that many believe is little more than an attempt to provide handouts to those in the country unlawfully.

The Affordable Care Act, established with the clear intention of providing coverage to those who are legally present, explicitly excludes illegal immigrants. Yet somehow, the Biden camp decided it was time to play legal hopscotch, claiming that DACA recipients deserved a slice of the health care pie. The judge didn’t mince words in his ruling, pointing out that deferred action status doesn’t magically turn someone into a “qualified alien.” Let’s face it: if being “American in every way except on paper” is the new standard, the rules of eligibility might as well be written on a napkin.

DACA, which was introduced back in 2012 during the Obama administration, was quite explicit in its design—recipients wouldn’t receive access to the Affordable Care Act. Despite this, Biden seems to think that a cozy chat at a press conference will conjure up eligibility from thin air. The whole situation raises eyebrows—not to mention questions about the administration’s respect for the existing legal framework.

The Immigration Reform Law Institute has applauded the ruling as a necessary pushback against what it sees as blatant disdain for established law. As Dale Wilcox, the IRLI’s executive director, pointed out, this latest attempt to expand Obamacare benefits to illegal aliens is just another example of the current administration’s disregard for the legal process. The battle lines have been drawn, with states like Ohio, Texas, and Florida standing in opposition to what they view as an illegal overreach by the federal government. This ruling reveals that persistence isn’t just a virtue; in this case, it may also be the key to maintaining the rule of law in America.
