The Department of Health and Human Services quietly dropped a government‑commissioned study this week that should make every parent and policymaker sit up. The report finds a clear statistical link between endorsement of certain “gender‑affirming” clinical positions and higher scores on a left‑wing authoritarianism scale — and those same people were more likely to say some kinds of political violence were “justified.” If you thought the word “woke” was just a slogan, this study puts a little more science behind the worry many conservatives have been voicing.
What the HHS study actually found
The preregistered survey polled 1,208 U.S. adults and created a new Clinical Gender Affirmation Scale (CGAS) to measure agreement with some clinical positions tied to gender care. Higher CGAS scores were associated with higher Left‑Wing Authoritarianism (LWA) scores. Both higher CGAS and higher LWA were also linked to greater reported justification for six hypothetical acts of political violence posed in the survey. Researchers, including voices from Rutgers, the Manhattan Institute, and the Network Contagion Research Institute, say the results are worth more study. Admiral Brian Christine, Assistant Secretary for Health, called for careful scientific scrutiny — which is the least responsible thing any government official can say and still be believed.
Important caveats critics are already pointing out
Before anyone runs headlines that “trans people are violent,” let’s be clear about limits. The survey measured agreement with clinical positions (like support for parents and pronoun use) — not whether anyone is trans or violent. It measured whether people said certain violent acts were justified, not whether they committed them. The study is correlational, meaning it found an association, not proof of cause and effect. Methodologists have also flagged possible problems: the CGAS may mix clinical consensus with political sentiment, the online panel sample may attract trolls or extreme respondents, and the design could bake in the hypothesis it wanted to test. Those are real issues that deserve follow‑up.
Why conservatives should care — and act
Even with caveats, the HHS release is a political earthquake for the left’s comfort zone. This study was paid for by HHS, preregistered, and now sits in the public record — not a right‑wing blog. That matters. If proponents of certain gender policies are more likely to endorse extreme political attitudes, policymakers must stop treating the debate as purely cultural theater. School boards, sports authorities, and hospitals should pause and demand better evidence before rubber‑stamping policies that touch kids and communities. And HHS should release the data, methods, and full questionnaire so neutral experts can replicate or rebut the findings.
We don’t demonize individuals because of their identity. But we do demand truth about the consequences of ideas. This HHS study is not the final word, but it’s the opening bell. Conservatives should press for transparent science, honest debate, and policies that protect children and public safety — not applause lines for the next woke experiment. If the left wants to keep insisting its agenda is harmless, then it should be able to survive the same scrutiny it asks the rest of us to endure.
