New York Gov. Kathy Hochul made a big show on Tuesday by signing off on a new commission to delve into reparations and racial justice, following in California’s footsteps. The commission will dig into New York’s slavery past and how it’s affecting the African American community today.

Hochul is really milking the occasion, talking about how New York used to have a bustling slave market right on Wall Street and how, even after slavery was officially squashed in 1827, the state still kept its hand in the illegal slave trade. She’s really laying it on thick, trying to guilt trip New Yorkers about their state’s historical ties to slavery.
The commission itself is set up to have nine members handpicked by the governor, state assembly speaker, and state Senate majority leader. And get this, they’re chosen based on their expertise, education, or experience. Hochul is also trying to guilt-trip immigrants and their children, saying that even though they didn’t have anything to do with slavery, they still have to pony up for reparations.
The New York Post didn’t hold back in calling out Hochul for this grandstanding move. They tore into her for playing politics and how this commission will probably just end up stirring the pot and making everyone mad.
