Israeli-Canadian CEO murdered in Egypt; Terrorist claim amidst robbery reports

An Israeli businessman with Canadian citizenship has been killed in Egypt, and reports about the incident have varied. Some sources said a group claiming to be a previously unknown terrorist organization took responsibility for the attack, while others suggested it may have started as a robbery. The Times of Israel reported that Egyptian authorities had arrested a suspect in connection with the murder.

The victim, Ziv Kipper, was shot and killed in Alexandria. His widow, Oksana Kipper, stated that she was informed the attack occurred because her husband was Jewish. In contrast, Reuters quoted an Egyptian security source claiming it was a robbery, not a terrorist act. The BBC reported that Egypt has initiated a criminal investigation into the shooting.

Kipper served as the CEO of the Egypt-based OK Group LLC, which specializes in exporting frozen fruits and vegetables. The company has offices in Israel and Ukraine. The Jerusalem Post reported that a group called the Vanguard of Liberation Group for Martyr Mohamed Salah asserted responsibility for Kipper’s killing, alleging that he was a Mossad agent. The group’s statement on Telegram promised more violent actions against Israelis and included the phrase “Shalom from the children of Gaza.”

The Vanguard of Liberation Group for Martyr Mohamed Salah referred to Mohamed Salah Ibrahim, an Egyptian police officer who killed three Israel Defense Forces soldiers near the Israel-Egypt border in June 2023. Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the reports of a Canadian citizen’s death in Egypt but did not elaborate further.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of international businessmen and the persistence of antisemitism. The circumstances surrounding Kipper’s killing continue to be investigated, and the global community is watching closely for any developments in the case.
