Tim Kaine, the tall guy with a penchant for Spanglish and a wardrobe that appeared to be pulled from an old dad’s closet, is a name that still resonates from the 2016 election. Chosen by Hillary Clinton as her running mate, Kaine embodied the desperate Democratic strategy to present a façade of relatability. Fast forward to today, and it seems Kamala Harris has decided to take a page right out of that tired playbook with her own Tim—Tim Walz, Minnesota’s governor.
Walz, much like Kaine, has donned the folksy guise of the average American. He’s got the hunting escapades, the high school coaching experience, and even the look of someone you’d expect to find perusing the aisles of Tractor Supply. Yet beneath this veneer lies a record that is anything but mainstream. Walz has consistently backed leftist policies, proving that for Democrats, presentation often trumps substance.

The historical context can’t be ignored. Kaine may have been a rickety relic of a more moderate Democratic era, but that was before the party became enamored with radical leftist ideas, which have since rotted out the core of the party. The progressive zeal that has overtaken Democratic thought would make it difficult for a moderate approach to gain traction—something that now seems painfully clear as Walz climbs on board Harris’ liberal express.
Hillary’s half-hearted attempt to package herself with Kaine fizzled out faster than a bad dad joke. The American people, especially those who identify as “deplorables,” saw through the smoke and mirrors, and it’s worth noting that the Harris-Walz ticket appears to be heading in the same direction. Voters are not easily fooled by flashy presentations when their wallets and values are at stake.
Walz’s tenure as governor has been marred by numerous missteps that would make anyone question his suitability for national office. He has caved in to the demands of radical groups like Antifa and BLM, enforced stringent COVID restrictions, and even approved policies that put tampons in boys’ bathrooms. The notion that a few relatable photo-ops and “aw-shucks” memes will warm the hearts of worried Americans is laughable. It seems some habits are hard to break, and the Democrats are stuck with a playbook that is outdated and ineffective.
