Man Pleads Not Guilty in Bizarre Attempt to Assassinate Trump on Golf Course

The recent saga involving Ryan Routh’s alleged attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump sounds more like the plot of a bad thriller than reality. In a stunning display of bravado—or perhaps just a complete lack of common sense—Routh popped up at Trump International Golf Club in Florida, armed and apparently ready to take a swing at democracy itself.

Routh, standing before a federal court in West Palm Beach, pleaded not guilty to five serious charges, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate. It’s hard to believe that someone would think that aiming at a former president while he’s just trying to enjoy a round of golf is a good idea. It seems Routh mistook the serene sport for some sort of high-stakes showdown. Spoiler alert: Golf balls can’t be shot at, and neither can the rule of law.

On September 15, Routh allegedly decided to set up camp on the outskirts of the golf course with a loaded semiautomatic rifle, clearly taking “going green” to a dangerous level. Unfortunately for him, a vigilant Secret Service agent swiftly caught wind of his antics. When Routh thought he could aim, his dreams of grandeur were interrupted by gunfire aimed at him, as the agent put action over inaction—a well-practiced response when the safety of a former president is at stake.

After using his firepower for stunningly bad judgment, Routh made a quick exit, only to find himself nabbed on the highway shortly after. Talk about quick retribution. The legal system is giving him a taste of his own medicine as he has been held without bail, proving that freedom is not free—especially when you decide you’d like to take a free shot at a former leader.

The situation is still unfolding, but Routh’s story serves as yet another reminder of the increasingly tumultuous political climate. In this age where civility seems to be a bygone concept, it’s hard not to shake one’s head at the antics of individuals willing to take such drastic measures. Who knew it would lead to a golf course becoming the site of a bizarre attempted assassination? That’s one way to ruin a perfectly sunny day on the links.
