Media Elites Twist Patriotism: How the Flag Became a Target

A striking Reuters photo from the July 4 Washington Metro captured a lone Black commuter surrounded by masked members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front, and that image cut straight through the comforting narratives the left keeps feeding the country. The picture — taken by Cheney Orr on the 250th anniversary weekend — became a viral symbol of how strange and dangerous public life has become in parts of our nation. Americans deserve to see the full scene and weigh it for themselves rather than letting media elites sanitize the meaning.

On Monday’s episode of The View, Sunny Hostin said that seeing American flags “all over the community” sometimes makes her feel unsafe, a remark she tied to the Patriot Front photo and broader anxieties she says come from being Black in America. Her candid admission didn’t happen in a vacuum, but conservatives are right to point out the shock value and selective outrage coming from the show’s panel. When media figures frame the Stars and Stripes as a symbol to be feared, they cross a line from critique into alienation of ordinary patriots.

Predictably, the comment ignited a conservative backlash, with commentators on mainstream outlets and social platforms calling out what they see as anti-American petulance and calling for accountability from ABC. Fox News and numerous conservative voices pushed back hard, arguing that equating everyday displays of the flag with white supremacy is a dangerous inversion of reality. Hardworking Americans who fly Old Glory in their yards don’t deserve to be smeared as extremists because a fringe group chose to use the same symbol.

Let’s be clear about the real villains in this picture: Patriot Front is a white nationalist organization that marched through D.C. on July 4 carrying both American and Confederate symbols, drawing condemnation across the political spectrum for its intimidation tactics. Their decision to ride the Metro in uniforms and masks was a stunt meant to frighten, and it’s right that the public, and the press, name that threat for what it is. Genuine conservatives reject these radicals and will never allow extremist stunts to redefine patriotism for the rest of us.

What rankles is the cultural double standard: the same media that excuses or downplays genuine left-wing intimidation is quick to lecture everyday Americans about the meanings of their flags. Democrats and late-night moralizers want to decide which symbols are “safe” and which people are allowed to feel proud, while regular citizens who serve, work, and pay taxes are treated as suspect. It’s an insult to veterans, police, and small-business owners who display the flag out of love for country, not hatred of their neighbors.

Patriots should answer this moment by standing firmer, not louder: defend the flag as a unifying emblem of freedom, push back politically against those who normalize extremism, and demand fair reporting that distinguishes fringe bad actors from mainstream Americans. Vote with your values, support local institutions that protect public safety, and keep teaching the next generation why the Stars and Stripes represent liberty and not a partisan club. The flag belongs to every citizen who believes in this country, and nobody in a TV studio gets to take that away.
