Minneapolis Sets $15 Minimum Cigarette Price to Curb Smoking

The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to set a minimum retail price of $15 per pack for cigarettes. This decision aims to improve public health and reduce tobacco use in the city. The ordinance also prohibits price discounts, coupons, and distribution of free samples for cigarettes and four-packs of cigars.

Once the measure is signed by Mayor Jacob Frey, the minimum price will take effect. This move is expected to push the consumer prices even higher as taxes are factored in. The new minimum price for cigarettes in Minneapolis will surpass the prices set in other major cities like New York City, where the minimum is $13 per pack.

The city council members expressed their support for the measure, with Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw emphasizing the seriousness of the public health crisis related to tobacco use. Council President Andrea Jenkins shared her personal experience, stating that the high cost of cigarettes was a factor in her decision to quit smoking eight years ago. She hopes the new minimum price will encourage others to either quit smoking or refrain from starting.

The penalties for violating the minimum price regulations range from a $500 fine for a first offense to license suspensions and revocations for repeat offenders. Council Member Linea Palmisano highlighted the importance of making tough changes to reduce dependence on tobacco, emphasizing the potential impact on public health.

Overall, the decision to implement a higher minimum price for cigarettes in Minneapolis reflects the city’s commitment to addressing public health concerns related to tobacco use.
