This is not a theoretical worry for hard-working Americans; it is a glaring failure in the machinery that is supposed to protect the purity of our elections.
Governor Mikie Sherrill said the registrations happened between June 2023 and June 2024 and that a preliminary review shows fewer than 400 of those individuals actually cast ballots in recent elections. While the number who voted may seem small to some, any illegal votes are intolerable and deserve a full accounting so citizens can have confidence that ballots are cast only by the eligible.
State officials have already pointed to the vendor and begun the process of replacing the software at the heart of the problem, and New Jersey has launched an independent review into how this catastrophe occurred. This is the kind of vendor and bureaucratic complacency that Washington has long tolerated while expecting Americans to accept the results without question.
Republicans and federal officials have seized on the disclosure as proof that stronger verification is necessary, and the Justice Department has pressed New Jersey for the data while warning states they could face criminal liability if they knowingly leave noncitizens on the rolls. The federal government must insist on accountability, not excuses, when errors like this threaten election integrity.
Conservative leaders are right to push reforms like the SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship and raise the bar for registering to vote in federal elections—sensible precautions in light of this New Jersey revelation. If the left truly cared about secure elections it would embrace safeguards that protect every lawful voter’s voice instead of reflexively attacking anyone who raises legitimate questions.
For years election-integrity advocates were dismissed or smeared for pointing out vulnerabilities in state systems; this episode vindicates those concerns and makes clear that vigilance pays. Americans should not accept the convenient framing that these incidents are merely rare anomalies when the systems in place allowed thousands of ineligible registrations to happen in the first place.
Lawmakers and state officials must act now: launch a transparent, forensic audit, suspend contracts with any vendor implicated in the failure, and pass enforceable proof-of-citizenship measures so this never happens again. Patriots who love this country and the rule of law will not rest until our elections are secure, accountable, and beyond reasonable doubt.
