Obama Slammed for Gun Control Hypocrisy: Drones, Chicago & More!

Former president Barack Obama was met with strong opposition on Twitter after he called for more gun control on National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Obama’s call for more gun control was made during his advocacy for Mike Bloomberg-affiliated Everytown for Gun Safety. In response to his tweet urging people to honor the victims of gun violence and prevent tragedy, Twitter user @TXGunRights called out Obama’s record of drone bombing American citizens, weddings, funerals, and schools. Meanwhile, other users criticized Obama for not addressing gun violence in his hometown of Chicago, where over 50 people were shot and 11 killed over the weekend.

Conservative Twitter account, Mostly Peaceful Memes, also mocked Obama for his lack of action on gun violence during his eight-year tenure as president, particularly in his hometown of Chicago. As some Twitter users highlighted, during Obama’s presidency, the Fast and Furious operation resulted in more than 2,000 guns being smuggled into Mexico, and two of those guns were found at the scene where Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was killed on duty in 2010.

Obama’s call for more gun control was met with widespread criticism on Twitter, with many users citing his past record on the issue and failure to address gun violence in his own hometown. As Obama continues to advocate for organizations like Everytown for Gun Safety, it remains to be seen if his calls for more gun control will be met with support or pushback from the public.
