Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre found herself in the hot seat on Tuesday afternoon at the White House, bombarded with questions that seemed to play out more like a comedy of errors than a press briefing. The topic of interest? President Joe Biden’s medical records, his medication regimen, and his cognitive condition. Given how evasive she became, you’d think she was being asked to solve world hunger.
When queried about releasing Biden’s full medical records in light of his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump — a debacle where he famously froze up several times and wandered off-course like a GPS with a broken signal — Jean-Pierre stubbornly clung to offering only a summary of Biden’s annual physical results. Her claim that the administration has been transparent about Biden’s health was as empty as a Hollywood set, especially after consistently denying reporters access to White House Doctor Kevin O’Connor for a Q & A session.

One could almost hear the collective eye-rolls when Jean-Pierre sidestepped inquiries about the medications Biden may have been taking before or during the debate. Her flippant remark that Biden was not on any cold medication was not exactly the smoking gun anyone was waiting for. Questions went unanswered about any other possible pills in play, leaving the public to wonder if the administration is hiding more than just Biden’s pillbox.

The comedy continued as journalists tried again to get a straight answer from Jean-Pierre about Biden’s medications, only to get their questions expertly dodged like some sort of political game of whack-a-mole. Each “I have already answered that” response felt like a scene from Groundhog Day, except nobody was laughing, least of all the American people wanting some transparency.
As the interrogation hit its climax, the pièce de résistance was when Jean-Pierre was asked directly if Biden has Alzheimer’s or any other degenerative conditions. Her answer was a resolute “no,” followed by a petulant quip suggesting the reporters should ask the same of “the other guy.” Well, Karine, it looks like the press did ask — they’re just waiting for you to catch up. Ignoring the elephant in the room won’t make it disappear; it just makes for one more awkward, unanswered question in the Biden administration’s repertoire.
