Rep. Greene Demands Pentagon Probe: Did They Hide Trump’s Balloon Info?

On Monday, Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene called for an investigation into the Biden administration’s allegations of Chinese spy balloons infiltrating the United States during former President Trump’s term. As a member of the House Oversight Committee, Greene expressed doubt that President Trump was not informed of such incidents and suggested that the Pentagon may have deliberately concealed security information from him. She requested a probe to uncover the truth and ensure that future Presidents are fully informed of any potential security risks.

The Biden administration has invited former Trump officials for a briefing and maintain that the incursions by Chinese spy balloons were not detected until after Trump’s presidency ended. This issue has generated controversy and raised questions, especially since Trump and a significant portion of the public have criticized Biden for permitting a spy balloon to roam the US for several days before it was shot down near the coast of South Carolina.

On Monday, General Glen VanHerck, the senior U.S. military leader responsible for taking down the Chinese spy balloon, stated that the military had not detected any previous spy balloons until the one that was discovered on January 28th. He added that U.S. intelligence was able to identify past flights through “additional methods of intelligence gathering” but did not reveal the sources, which could include cyber espionage, telephone interceptions, or human intelligence.

The investigation proposed by Representative Greene could shed light on the Chinese spy balloons that entered the United States during President Trump’s time in office. According to the Pentagon, at least four such flights have taken place, three of which happened during the Trump administration and one during the Biden administration. Republican Representative Michael Waltz, who is part of the House Intelligence Committee, stated on Sunday that the Pentagon informed him of multiple Chinese balloon incidents in recent years, including over Florida.

Greene’s proposed investigation could help to uncover any potential security threats that may have been kept from President Trump during his time in office. It could also provide clarity on why it took so long for the Biden administration to shoot down the Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina and whether or not it was an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern of espionage. Ultimately, Greene’s investigation could help to ensure that all future presidents are made aware of any potential security threats and that any breaches in command are held accountable.
