REPORT: Biden Brings In Impeachment Lawyers To Defend Mayorkas

The DHS has taken a preventative measure to safeguard Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas from the possibility of impeachment proceedings. To do this, DHS has engaged the services of Debevoise & Plimpton, a law firm whose attorneys have previously represented House Democrats during the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. This action is in response to the announcement by House Republicans that they plan to pursue impeachment against Mayorkas due to his management of the situation at the southern border.

A spokesperson from the DHS issued a statement in response to the situation, saying, “The Department of Homeland Security has retained outside counsel to help ensure the department’s vital mission is not interrupted by the unprecedented, unjustified, and partisan impeachment efforts by some Members of Congress, who have already taken steps to initiate proceedings.” The DHS representative also emphasized that the department does not want the impeachment efforts to divert the attention of Secretary Mayorkas or the DHS from their daily responsibilities of safeguarding homeland security and national security.

Since Secretary Mayorkas took office, the DHS has experienced a historic increase in illegal immigration at the southern border. During the 2022 fiscal year, the DHS recorded over 2.3 million encounters with migrants. In a statement, Mayorkas stated, “Everyone agrees that the immigration system has been terribly broken and outdated for decades. It is my hope that Congress takes that problem and fixes it once and for all.” He added that despite the broken system, they are doing all they can to improve its efficiency, offer humanitarian aid when allowed by law, and enforce consequences as required by law.

Debevoise & Plimpton declined to give a statement on the situation. The DHS also did not provide a response to a request for comment. It is evident that the DHS is taking measures to defend their Secretary from the possibility of impeachment proceedings. They have hired the services of Debevoise & Plimpton, a law firm whose attorneys previously served House Democrats during the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. This action follows the announcement by House Republicans that they plan to pursue impeachment against Mayorkas due to his management of the situation at the southern border.

It is evident that DHS is taking this matter seriously and is doing all they can to protect their Secretary from potential impeachment proceedings. They are doing this by hiring outside counsel to ensure their mission is not interrupted and that Mayorkas is not distracted from his important work. Mayorkas himself has expressed his hope that Congress takes this problem and fixes it once and for all. It remains to be seen what will happen in the future but it is clear that DHS is doing all they can to protect their Secretary from potential impeachment proceedings.
