Scandal Unfolds: Feeding Our Future Bilked Kids for Billions

The Covid fraud fallout continues to unfold in federal court as investigators and prosecutors peel back the layers of what the Justice Department has called one of the largest pandemic-era scams in the nation. Officials say the Feeding Our Future operation exploited federal child nutrition programs during the crisis and siphoned off roughly a quarter-billion dollars that should have gone to vulnerable kids.

At the center of the scandal is Aimee Bock, the founder and former executive director of Feeding Our Future, who was found guilty after a lengthy trial in which jurors deliberated and weighed mountains of evidence presented by prosecutors. Her conviction in March marked a turning point, but it’s only one chapter in a sprawling case that still has many loose ends headed back to the courthouse.

Federal judges have already begun ordering the seizure and sale of assets tied to the scheme to try to make taxpayers whole, including approval to sell a Brooklyn Park property and preliminary forfeiture moves that put millions of dollars, luxury items and bank accounts on the line for restitution. Those court orders underscore that while politicians talked about pandemic relief, crooks were cashing checks and padding their lifestyles.

The Department of Justice isn’t slowing down: multiple co-defendants have pleaded guilty, additional indictments continue to be unsealed, and prosecutors are aggressively pursuing forfeiture and restitution. This sustained legal pressure is necessary, because the scale of the theft required federal muscle and continual follow-through to claw back taxpayer money.

Americans should be livid that money meant for hungry kids ended up lining pockets while oversight failed spectacularly on Democrat watch; that failure of governance deserves more than hand-wringing and press releases. So far, accountability has largely landed on defendants and nonprofit operators, but the broader culture of lax controls and loosened pandemic waivers — and those who oversaw them — must answer to voters and investigators alike.

This case must be a wake-up call: Congress and state legislatures should tighten program safeguards, demand full forensic audits, and give prosecutors the tools to pursue every dollar stolen. Hardworking Americans funded those programs in good faith; they deserve every penny returned, and a system rebuilt so that trust is not squandered by grifters again.
