In a bold and decisive move, the Senate passed a resolution today denouncing the terrorist group Hamas and the alarming rise of anti-Semitism on college campuses across the country. Sponsored by the courageous Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), this resolution sends a powerful message that the United States will not tolerate such intolerable behavior.
The resolution, which received bipartisan support, highlights the brutal and barbaric acts committed by Hamas against innocent civilians. From targeted killings to rapes and mutilation, Hamas has proven time and time again that they have no regard for human life. The resolution also notes that during the recent attacks on Israel, 30 American citizens have lost their lives, with 13 others still missing. This is a clear and unequivocal call to action against the evil forces of Hamas.
Unfortunately, the need for this resolution was made even more evident when anti-Semitic messages were projected onto the library of George Washington University. The police were forced to intervene and shut down these hateful acts, which included calls for the destruction of Israel and celebratory messages for terrorist groups like Hamas. These incidents are just a glimpse into the frightening tide of anti-Semitism sweeping our college campuses.
But the problem doesn’t stop there. At Cooper Union in New York City, Jewish students found themselves trapped inside their own library while pro-Palestinian demonstrators banged on the doors and spewed anti-Semitic statements. Harvard University student groups have shamelessly blamed Israel for the terrorism inflicted by Hamas, while a president of the New York University School of Law’s Student Bar Association expressed unwavering solidarity with Palestinians and even vandalized posters of missing Israelis.

With so much hatred and violence directed towards Israel and Jewish Americans, it is imperative that we take a stand. The Senate resolution unequivocally condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas and labels the anti-Israel and pro-Hamas rhetoric on college campuses as morally contemptible and anti-Semitic. It emphasizes Israel’s right to exist and defend itself, while affirming the right to safety and security for Jewish Americans. It is a call for the United States government to fully support Israel in its fight against terrorism.
As Israel prepares for a ground operation to defend its citizens from the relentless attacks of Hamas, this resolution serves as a reminder that the United States stands firmly by its closest ally in the Middle East. Thousands of lives have been lost, and hundreds of people are still missing. It is high time that we send a clear message that terrorism and anti-Semitism will not be tolerated, and that Israel has the unequivocal right to exist and defend itself.
It is disheartening, but not surprising, that Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) initially blocked a move to approve the resolution. However, the resilient support from senators across the aisle prevailed, and this crucial measure was passed. Let us hope that this resolution serves as a wake-up call to those who have turned a blind eye to the horrors committed by Hamas and the alarming rise of anti-Semitism. The fight against terrorism and bigotry begins here, and it begins now.
