Washington has been awash in waste and bureaucratic bungling for years, and a focused Senate can finally start bringing accountability to sprawling programs that have grown beyond their original purpose.
One clear target is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, where rampant errors and overpayments have left taxpayers on the hook and honest states punished for others’ failures. The prospect that dozens of states could be forced to repay millions because of high error rates proves the current system lacks rigorous oversight and lets fraud and incompetence siphon off the public’s money.
We already see the results of reforms: SNAP enrollment has fallen sharply since the “One Big Beautiful Bill” reforms took effect, showing that curbing abuse and restoring work standards produces measurable change. Conservatives should celebrate that taxpayer dollars are being better targeted to those who truly need help, while insisting on smarter verification so the safety net is a bridge, not a permanent dependency.
State accountability provisions aren’t punishment so much as common-sense reforms urging better administration and stewardship of federal funds, and red states pushing back on sloppy practices deserve support. For too long, bureaucrats and partisan officials have turned blind eyes to duplicate benefits, dead people on rolls, and lax eligibility checks; holding states to higher standards protects both the needy and the taxpayers who fund these programs.
Yes, Washington’s process can be messy, and Republicans must be smart about how they craft and defend reforms after earlier procedural setbacks showed how easily even good ideas can be blocked.
