Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s Voter ID Gambit Fails

Senate Majority Leader John Thune forced a vote tonight that made the politics of the Senate impossible to ignore for hardworking Americans. By tying the Stop Insider Trading Act, H.R. 7008, to a federal voter ID rider, leadership created a Washington spectacle that was destined to die rather than deliver real reform.

What happened on the floor

The cloture vote on the Stop Insider Trading Act with the voter ID attachment failed 53–47, falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance. A companion data‑center ratepayer bill also failed to reach cloture, leaving both measures dead for now and senators heading into campaign travel. The roll call exposed exactly what Thune himself admitted: this was as much about putting Democrats on the record as it was about passing policy.

The Washington trap

This was political theater dressed up as action, and conservatives should be furious. Bundling a broadly popular election integrity measure with an ethics reform was either a cynical way to let the ethics bill die or an inept strategy by leadership that values optics over outcomes. The result protects the club, comforts the donor class, and gives Democrats a ready-made excuse to block a measure they could not otherwise oppose without political cost.

What real conservatives should demand

Republicans who actually want a win must strip the voter ID rider and push a clean Stop Insider Trading Act to get bipartisan support for ethics reform. At the same time, a standalone voter ID bill that respects state primacy and election security should be advanced on its own merits to answer the polling and voters demanding integrity. If Senate leadership prefers messaging over results, grassroots patriots need to make clear that manufactured failure is unacceptable.

Why Americans should care

Voter ID polls extremely well across the country, and the public rightly expects Congress to ban insider trading by its members without wringing the issue through political gamesmanship. When the Senate chooses theater over passage, it hands Democrats a talking point and robs citizens of tangible reform. Conservatives must hold their senators accountable and insist on legislation that actually protects election integrity and ends the insider‑trading culture in Washington.
