Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), a reliable member of the President’s fan club, has signaled that he’s ready to put some conditions on the U.S. military aid to Israel. He’s been all about backing Israel, but now he’s making noise about reeling in that support if things don’t shape up the way he wants them to. This comes after an Israeli airstrike knocked out some humanitarian aid workers, which has gotten the Democrats all riled up.
Coons has been talking tough for a while, saying that if Israel makes a bold move and invades Rafah, then he’s all for yanking the aid. But now, he’s sounding off like never before, saying that it’s time to lay down the law with Israel. He’s been a big Israel fan, but now he’s like, “Hmm, maybe not so much.”
The recent airstrike by Israel, which took out seven humanitarian workers, has got the Democrats in a tizzy. They’re not happy with Israel’s push to take down Hamas and are making their displeasure known. President Biden is about to have a chitchat with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and you can bet it’s not going to be a friendly chat. Biden’s already said he thinks Israel needs to do more to keep civilians safe, so it’s safe to say this call might be a bit tense.
In March, Congress tossed a hefty $3.3 billion in aid Israel’s way, no strings attached. But now, some Democrats are saying, “Hold up, that was then, this is now.” They want the Biden administration to start giving Israel a hard time about their war tactics, and one of them is even suggesting it’s time to cut off that aid flow, no questions asked.
Coons is talking a big game, saying it’s time to show Israel who’s boss and make it clear that we’re not handing out aid like it’s Halloween candy. He’s throwing some shade at Israel’s prime minister and saying it’s high time for a change in tactics. He’s making it clear that he’s all about supporting the Israeli people, but not so much the folks in charge right now.
