Student Silenced for Pro-Life Poem: Schools Policing Speech Again

A 13-year-old student at Drake Middle School in Jefferson County, Colorado, was reportedly barred from reading a pro-life slam poem she wrote for a class assignment after her teacher called the work “too political” and “offensive.” This episode, captured and shared on social media, is the latest example of educators policing students’ speech while insisting their own political messaging is neutral.

According to video reposts and local reporting, the assignment asked students to write slam poems about conflicts they felt passionately about, and the girl says she met every requirement before seeking permission to present. When the teacher refused, the student’s mother pushed back and exposed the double standard that has become commonplace in many classrooms.

The young poet’s piece — which plainly argued that “a life is a life, no matter how small” — was later posted so the public could hear what the school silenced. That the poem needed to be read outside the classroom to reach an audience is a sad commentary on how fearful public education has become of any viewpoint that pushes back against the prevailing orthodoxy.

Parents reported that the same teacher routinely introduced material on immigration, LGBTQ issues, and racial topics while telling this student her pro-life viewpoint crossed the line into politicking. This blatant double standard isn’t just poor pedagogy; it’s ideological gatekeeping — a form of soft censorship that trains children to accept certain ideas as incontestable facts.

If schools are serious about fostering critical thinking, they must stop punishing students for holding mainstream, deeply held convictions and start teaching debate, not doctrinaire sermons. Parents and school boards should demand transparency, investigate this incident, and ensure teachers respect students’ constitutional free-speech rights rather than weaponizing their classroom to enforce a politics curriculum.

Kudos to the brave student and her family for refusing to be silenced — their courage should remind every American that liberty begins at home and in the classroom. Conservatives will not stand by while public schools become incubators of one-sided ideology; it’s time to take our children’s education back and insist schools teach how to think, not what to think.
