The View’s Elites Misread Patriotism as Not All Flags Are Hate Symbols

A Reuters photograph from the July 4th celebrations showing members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front surrounding a lone commuter went viral and sparked a heated exchange on The View, where co‑host Sunny Hostin said she sometimes feels “unsafe” when she sees American flags displayed in certain neighborhoods.

That reaction deserves context, but it also deserves scrutiny. View hosts who command national platforms and fat paychecks owe their audience honest analysis, not performative victimhood dressed up as moral clarity — a point conservatives have been making as the clip circulates.

Yes, the Patriot Front march is reprehensible and those thugs deserve every bit of condemnation they get, but the presence of extremists does not turn the American flag into a symbol of hate for every community. Conservatives rightly note the difference between confronting real threats and allowing a single viral image to become an excuse for an entire media class to trash the country that made their careers possible.

Guest co‑host Michelle Buteau’s follow‑up — that the image “is how we feel walking into many rooms” — reveals the larger problem: a tendency to paint broad swaths of Americans with the worst brush because a radical fringe showed up for a stunt.

Call it what it is: elite moralizing. If you make millions, live in safety, and send your children to the best schools, you don’t get to moonlight as an oracle of suffering every time a headline upsets your narrative. Hardworking Americans who fly the flag do so out of pride and gratitude, not racial dog whistles, and they’re tired of having their patriotism scorned by people who profit from grievance.

We should hunt down and punish the real extremists, not allow them to hijack national symbols or become cudgels in a culture‑war performance piece. The 250th anniversary of our republic is a moment to remember both our flaws and our successes — to stand against hate while refusing to let it redefine the flag for the rest of us.

If the woke court of cable TV wants to keep preaching that America is beyond redemption, that’s their right — but it’s also our right to call them out, hold them to account, and proudly defend the flag and the freedoms it represents. Real patriots will keep celebrating the promise of this nation and demanding better from those who demean it while enjoying its rewards.
